Questions to Ask a Home Care Agency
The best agency interview is specific. Ask about the care tasks, schedule and household situation that actually matter rather than relying on general statements that an agency can “help with everything.”
Service and care questions
- Do you serve the exact ZIP code or address where care is needed?
- Which of the required personal-care, mobility, supervision and household tasks can your caregivers perform?
- Are there tasks your caregivers are not permitted to perform?
- Do you have experience with the person’s specific functional needs or care situation?
Caregiver and supervision questions
- How do you screen caregivers before hiring them?
- What training and ongoing supervision do caregivers receive?
- How do you decide which caregiver is matched with a client?
- Can we meet or speak with the caregiver before the first regular shift?
- What happens if the assigned caregiver is not a good fit?
Scheduling and backup questions
- What is the minimum visit length and minimum weekly commitment?
- How quickly could care start?
- Can the schedule change as the person’s needs change?
- What happens if a caregiver calls off or cannot arrive?
- Is someone from the agency available after normal business hours?
Pricing and agreement questions
- What is the hourly or shift rate for the requested schedule?
- Are weekends, holidays, overnight shifts or short-notice changes priced differently?
- Are there deposits, enrollment fees or other charges?
- What are the cancellation and termination rules?
- How often are invoices issued and what payment methods are accepted?
Before deciding
Ask the same core questions of more than one agency and write down the answers. A lower hourly rate is not necessarily the better option if the agency cannot reliably staff the required schedule or cannot provide an essential task.
If a capability or service area is important and the information is unclear, confirm it directly rather than treating missing information as a No.

How Careometry prepares these resources
Careometry publishes practical editorial guides to help families understand home-care choices and ask more precise questions before contacting agencies. Where a guide relies on an official rule or government source, the relevant reference is linked in the article. Agency capability and service-area claims remain governed by Careometry's separate evidence and provenance rules.
